59 pages
Grade Level: Elementary – Middle School
Includes teacher's guide + Calliope Magazine, volume 21
This teacher's guide was developed specifically for teachers in the New York City Public Schools to encourage the use of "Indigo: A Color That Links the World," Calliope: Exploring World History (September 2010, Volume 21, Number 1) and the study of the Silk Road in their classrooms. The indigo issue of Calliope and the teacher's guide were developed in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Project as part of its Silk Road Connect education initiative.
Dear Educator,
In our complex world it is crucial that educators have the tools to help students understand not only their own lives, but the broadest possible horizons as well. The Silk Road Project provides a gateway to greater understanding of the world through active educational programs and resources and multidisciplinary explorations of topics inspired by the Silk Road. The study of indigo provides teachers and students with a unique opportunity to follow the thread of one ubiquitous material across science, social studies, ELA, music, visual arts, and mathematics.
Our goal is an education that incorporates the four priorities of making the subject memorable, inspiring passion-driven learning, developing a disciplined imagination and fostering empathy. We at the Silk Road Project are honored to join you in your daily effort to provide an education that will result in citizens who are active participants in shaping a future of which we can all be proud.
Sincerely,
Yo-Yo Ma
